What’s the cost of computers left on unnecessarily overnight?

Taken from EcoGeek

That’s right, According to a recent study this is how much it costs to power all of the computers left on overnight in the US alone. $1,720,000,000.00 USD!!! That’s 14.4 million metric tons of CO2 a year. It seems that 30% of corporate computers are left on overnight. Residential computers also add to this cost.

If this figure isn’t enough to shock you into turning off your PC then nothing will. If you need a hand in making your computer more efficient or quicker to shut down/start up, see our previous posts on making your computer more efficient.

This is an interestingly large number. But if that money was not spend directly on electricity it would be spent on generally throughout the economy, indirectly consuming energy embodied in products and stimulating growth - which means more energy use.

Imagine the possibility this money was instead spend on something like air travel, and the energy and greenhouse gas 'savings' look fairly slim.

I think the point being made is that it is a completely unnecessary waste.

Also, i personally don't think that just because savings can be made, then they then necessarily HAVE to be spent on something else that pollutes. It is up to the individual or organisation. I agree this is an issue, but not an excuse for apathy.
